Church in a changing context

Staring Reality in the Face

A woman expresses confusion when her two sons no longer go to church and now she is watching her grandchildren grow up without any Christian formation.

A young couple who once served on the staff of a Christian youth organisation confess that thye have stopped attending any church, because what is happening inside the church is out of touch with the realities of life that young people face.

A church board looks at statistics for the previous year and wonders why its best efforts to improve the church's have not amounted to any effective growth.

A pastor in his forties has worked incalculbale hours to grow the church in a new suburban area, but lately  he is asking himself if he wants to spend the rest of his life creating amazing programmes and Sunday events.

In this new clearing people feel the crisis; they want  to know what has happened to their churches and why things don't  work like they once did.

One of the first  steps  of the missional journey is taken when we open our eyes to the many ways people i n our local churches and their neighbourhood's  feel and experience this clearing.

This involves  turning attention away from  our preoccupation  with our need to achieve or change something,  and attend to what is happening in our people.
